Dr Abdullah Ismaeel Mohamed, Assistant Professor from the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS) in the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) recently participated in the 15th Abu Dhabi Wound Care Conference in the United Arab Emirates. The conference focused on the latest topics and advancements in wound care, with experts providing educational experiences through a comprehensive scientific programme.
Dr Mohamed presented a scientific research poster on a rare foot disease known as retronychia, which involves abnormal growth of the nail bed leading to pain, secretions, and nail deformation. He discussed the diagnosis and treatment methods for this condition, highlighting new techniques such as educating patients on self-care using local anaesthetic cream to prevent recurrence.
In addition to Dr Mohamed, the research paper was prepared by Dr Maryam Baqi, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Consultant, and Dr Mai Matar, Radiology and Musculoskeletal Radiology Consultant. The findings discussed the importance of patient education and awareness to prevent misdiagnosis and ensure successful treatment outcomes.
This condition, first described in 1999, remains unfamiliar to many doctors, underscoring the need for continued research and awareness in the medical field. Dr Mohamed further emphasised the role of patient education in managing retronychia effectively and preventing its reappearance.
