A workshop on writing the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations, organised by the Medical Education Department at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS) at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), has concluded within the framework of the skills development programme for faculty members at the college. The workshop aimed to improve the skills of clinical stage faculty members in writing practical tests for students at the end of each clinical course as well as the bachelor’s exam.
On this occasion, Dr Hany Atwa Head of the Medical Education Department, pointed out that the OSCE is one of the most reliable and approved methods for evaluating the practical skills of medical students.
During the workshop, Dr Atwa presented an introductory lecture that included the principles and best practices used in OSCE examinations. This was followed by a series of training sessions that varied between lectures and discussion sessions between the workshop trainers and participants.
On his part, Dr Mohamed Hany, Head of the Family and Community Medicine Department, who participated in the training, explained that the workshop focused on the cooperation of members of the clinical departments working in small groups to simulate reality in writing the test stations.
Members of the department were required during the workshop to write instructions for students and examiners, define and formulate the assessment tools to be used, and write scenarios for integrated medical cases to be simulated during the examination station.
The workshop received significant interaction and approval from the faculty members in attendance. This was followed by an evaluation of the workshop and discussions about applying the skills when writing test stations in the coming months.
