A lecture organised by the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS) at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) discussed the dangers of binge eating disorder from both psychological and physiological dimensions.
On this occasion, Prof. Mariwan Husni, Head of the Psychiatry Department at AGU, and Dr Tareq Al Shaibani, Associate Professor in the Physiology Department at the CMMS, warned about the serious health consequences for individuals who suffer from binge eating disorder, stressing that this disorder can lead to health issues such as high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux, and sleep disorders related to breathing.
Prof. Husni attributed this disorder to various psychological reasons, where individuals consume large amounts of food without paying attention to the taste or quantity, disregarding the body’s actual need. He noted that people who are overweight or obese are most susceptible to this disorder, and it is essential to consult with doctors for diagnosis and to receive appropriate behavioural therapy, which may include following weight loss programmes, intense exercise, or fasting.
Prof. Husni explained: “Individuals suffering from binge eating disorder often experience feelings of sadness, anxiety, disgust, and depression. They may also feel guilty after overeating, even when not hungry. Psychological treatment, support groups, family support, and self-help strategies are recommended for managing this disorder.”
On his part, Dr Al Shaibani discussed the changes in the brain of individuals with binge eating disorder, noting an increase in the dopamine hormone responsible for feelings of happiness. He highlighted the serious health risks associated with this disorder, such as intestinal disorders, digestive issues, chronic dehydration, ulcers, heartburn, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and fainting.
He emphasised the importance of identifying the underlying causes of the disorder through psychological and medical exams, consulting with a nutritionist, and implementing healthy eating habits to effectively manage and reduce binge eating.
