The Leadership, Ethics and Professionalism Programme (LEAP) was recently concluded at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS) at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU). The programme, held annually, aims to improve leadership skills and professional ethics in medical practices for students of medicine and medical sciences. It also aims to enrich their experiences and provide them with leadership skills to achieve their goals and discover future leadership areas in the medical field.
On the occasion, Prof. Mariwan Husni, Head of the Psychiatry Department at the CMMS, said that the programme has been held annually since 2015, explaining that this year’s edition included workshops for clinical stage students focusing on medical ethics and patient care. He added that the programme emphasised the spiritual and cultural characteristics of patients and doctors, and topics frequently covered in licensing exams in GCC countries.
For his part, Dr Haitham Jahrami, Head of LEAP, praised the students’ active participation in the workshops and discussions, clarifying that the workshop discussed professional ethics in the healthcare sector, emphasising principles of transparency, integrity and respect for privacy of patients.
The programme aims to develop leadership and professional skills for medical students by identifying the experiences of Gulf consultants who participated in the Career Day. The consultants shared success stories in developing healthcare and personal experiences that raised standards of medical education. The programme also aims to teach students’ ethical, professional and leadership skills, as well as work-life balance skills for their future practices.
