First Bahraini to visit every country in the world

In a remarkable feat of global exploration, photographer Rasha Yousif has become the first Bahraini to visit every country in the world. Photography, combined with curiosity, has led her to this 12-year odyssey which took her to the far corners of the globe, capturing moments and building connections along the way.

“After a few photo tours, I realised I enjoyed traveling to meet people, learn about different cultures, and hear their stories,” Yousif shared with the Bahrain News Agency (BNA) from her final stop in Hadhramaut, Yemen.

Proud of her accomplishment, she reflected on how each challenge bolstered her confidence and gave her a “superhero feeling”.  She believes her journey reflects the passion for achievement that Bahrainis are known for, and the creativity and resilience of Bahraini women, who continue working to be recognised on a larger stage.

In August 2024, Maryam Sultan from Kuwait became the first Arab woman to complete a similar feat, marking a milestone within the regional travel community, which Yousif noted is highly supportive.

Embracing an organic approach, Yousif’s journey extended beyond officially recognised countries to include territories with unique cultural identities, such as Palestine.  “It’s not about lists; it’s about history, culture, and meeting people,” she emphasised.

Yousif, a proud Muharraqi and the first hijab-wearing woman to achieve this, said she represented her Bahraini identity by being true to herself.  She brought elements of Bahraini hospitality along the way, gifting tokens to families and communities.

Her journey, however, was not without obstacles she faced visa issues, logistical challenges, and even experienced a day stranded at an airport, reminiscent of the film The Terminal.

Each trip demanded thorough planning, from finances and timing to physical and mental preparation. While she often traveled solo, she occasionally enlisted guides, particularly in countries requiring local insights.

Her journey was self-sponsored, and there were times when finances had almost disrupted her plans. When funds ran low towards the end of her quest, she turned to her online community, setting up a photo gallery for supporters to purchase prints.  This innovative approach not only helped her financially but also demonstrated the power of community in achieving seemingly impossible goals.

As the first Bahraini to achieve this feat, Yousif hopes her journey will inspire others, particularly women in Bahrain and the region.  “I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their dreams,” she said, reflecting the determination of Bahrainis to make an impact on the world stage.

Throughout her travels, Yousif shared her experiences with followers on social media, primarily Instagram.  “By documenting my journey, my followers felt like they were part of it,” she noted.  By the time she reached her final destination, she felt a sense of collective achievement.  “It felt amazing to have so many people witness my journey from the beginning.”

Now that her journey is complete, Yousif is focusing on her travel business, specialising in guided tours to unique destinations in West Africa and Latin America.  She is also considering documenting her experiences through a book and photo exhibition to continue inspiring and educating others.

Rasha Yousif’s achievement as the first Bahraini to visit every country is more than a tally of countries; it is a testament to curiosity, perseverance, and cultural exchange.  Through her lens, she has brought Bahrain closer to the world, demonstrating how exploration can bridge cultures and foster understanding.
