DANAT to launch Egyptian royal jewellery book at Jewellery Arabia

The Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) is set to host a distinguished ceremony to unveil the book “Egyptian Royal Family Jewellery”.

This publication offers an in depth exploration of the rare and exceptional treasures once owned by the Alawite dynasty, a royal lineage tracing its origins to Muhammad Ali Pasha. Renowned for their lavish lifestyle, members of this distinguished family, including pashas and khedives, gained acclaim for their discerning taste and passion for acquiring jewels of unparalleled beauty and craftsmanship.

The launch event will take place at DANAT’s booth at Jewellery Arabia 2024 Exhibition on Friday, November 29, at 5:00 PM, at the Exhibition World Bahrain. Amina El Demirdash, granddaughter of Queen Nazli and niece of King Farouk, will be present, adding a regal touch to this momentous occasion.

Authored by Dr. Abdullah Al Sulaiti and published by the Nafayes Foundation in collaboration with DANAT, the book presents a compelling narrative of the Alawite dynasty’s rich heritage as told through their remarkable collection of jewellery.

The book explores the evolution of these treasures, from traditional to contemporary designs, and showcases the remarkable gemstones that adorned them, including pearls, rubies, and emeralds, alongside precious metals like gold and silver. It also sheds light on the intricate craftsmanship that epitomised the elegance and sophistication of the Alawite dynasty.

The book stands as both a scientific and historical reference, offering invaluable insights for collectors of rare publications and scholars in the fields of jewellery and gemmology. Its importance has been formally acknowledged by King Fuad II, who praised Dr. Al Sulaiti in a personal letter for his exemplary efforts in preserving and documenting the distinguished legacy of the Alawite family.

Commenting on the occasion, Noora Jamsheer, CEO of DANAT, stated: “We are honoured to collaborate with Nafayes Foundation and Dr. Abdulla Al Sulaiti on the publication of this exceptional book. It offers a rich exploration of the Alawi family’s unparalleled creativity and craftsmanship in the field of royal jewellery. “This initiative underscores DANAT’s dedication to preserving the cultural and historical legacy of pearls and jewellery in the Gulf region and the Arab world. By meticulously documenting and sharing this invaluable heritage, DANAT aims to educate and inspire future generations, ensuring these enduring traditions are passed down and celebrated for years to come. “

Jamsheer extended a warm invitation to researchers, industry professionals, and enthusiasts to attend the launch event and explore the book, which stands as a remarkable contribution to the Arab literary and cultural heritage.

Dr. Abdullah Al Sulaiti, explained that his book showcases a rare collection of jewellery belonging to Egypt’s royal family, and provides a historical overview of Egypt’s rulers, tracing their legacy from Muhammad Ali Pasha, the Wali of Egypt, to King Fouad II.

Dr. Al Sulaiti said, “The book represents one of the most significant royal collections in the Arab world, featuring unique gifts and artifacts of distinct royal heritage. These pieces reflect the evolution of modern Egyptian royal history. The collection includes exquisite jewellery crafted by renowned European houses, underscoring its exceptional historical and cultural value. Among the highlights is the Muhammad Ali necklace, an extraordinary piece made of gold and diamonds, commissioned by Sultan Hussein Kamel.”

Dr. Al Sulaiti extended his gratitude to DANAT Institute, led by Noora Jamsheer, for its invaluable support in completing the book, and acknowledged the Nafayes Foundation for its continued assistance in designing and producing this important work, which serves as a vital reference for researchers studying the jewellery of the Alawite dynasty in the Middle East.
