The Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT), the first accredited training centre by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) in the Middle East, has announced the launch of the Sixth Edition of its Gemmology Foundation Programme.

The programme is delivered following a curriculum approved by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) and aims to provide participants with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of gemstones, pearls, and natural diamonds, enabling them to enhance their expertise and skills in jewellery craftsmanship or lay the foundation for a successful career in the field.

This comprehensive programme includes foundational courses and a diploma certified by Gem-A, designed to equip participants with in-depth knowledge of gemstones, pearls, and natural diamonds. It aims to enhance their expertise and skills in jewellery making or establish a successful career in the gemmology field.

This programme serves as a vital step for those aspiring to pursue the Gemmology Diploma and offers participants the opportunity to attain membership in Gem-A. Graduates can use prestigious professional designations, such as FGA (Fellow of the Gemmological Association), to complete Gemmology.

This title signifies excellence and is highly regarded in the gemmology profession.

Participants will also gain the knowledge and skills needed to launch their jewellery businesses, unlocking entrepreneurial opportunities in various fields, including jewellery design, gemstone evaluation, lab technician roles, and gemstone procurement.

The programme offers internationally recognized certifications from Gem-A, a globally renowned authority in gemmological and jewellery education with over 110 years of expertise. Accredited by Ofqual in England, these certifications guarantee the highest standards of integrity and credibility.

Key topics highlighted include the properties of gemstones, proper care and commercial applications, value and pricing factors, and professional handling of rough, polished, and mounted gemstones.

Participants will also learn about organic and synthetic gem materials, imitation stones, and the accurate use of gemmological tools for conducting tests and observations. Additionally, the course covers the gemstone lifecycle, from mining to retail, and provides the skills needed to distinguish between natural, treated, and synthetic gemstones.

Noora Jamsheer, Chief Executive Officer of DANAT, emphasised the significance of the Gemmology Foundation Programme as a pivotal step for anyone aspiring to excel in gemmology, and stated, “This programme, offered by DANAT as an accredited training centre of Gem-A, provides a comprehensive educational experience. It also includes specialised course materials such as a workbook, an instrument kit, and foundation stone set for practical application.”

The CEO added, “Through this programme, we aim to empower individuals to make informed decisions in gemstone purchasing and investments. The rising prevalence of laboratory-grown diamonds and cultured pearls highlights the growing importance of gemmological education and awareness. Investing in this knowledge not only helps avoid costly mistakes but also fosters innovation and success in this promising sector.”

Jamsheer further explained that the Gemmology Foundation Programme is thoughtfully tailored to cater to a wide audience, from professionals seeking career advancement to enthusiasts eager to explore the field. Upon completing the course, participants will be proficient in identifying, testing, and confidently handling various gemstones.

The CEO underscored DANAT’s commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities that bolster Bahrain’s position as a global hub for gemstones and jewellery, and concluded, “We are driving transformative opportunities for individuals and institutions to achieve unparalleled excellence in the jewellery industry through world-class education and skill enhancement. By fostering innovation and empowering expertise, this initiative paves the way for sustainable growth and long-term success in this dynamic sector.”
