Carrefour Celebrates 16-Year Sustainability Journey on International Plastic Bag Free Day

Carrefour, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim in the Kingdom of Bahrain, continues its pledge for a plastic-free future by extending its sustainability efforts across its operations, on the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day. This builds on the leading retailer’s 16-year sustainability journey.

As early as 2007, Carrefour was the first retailer in the MENA region to introduce reusable shopping bags. Soon after, the retailer co-branded reusable bags with UNICEF, encouraging customers to adopt sustainable modes of shopping while donating to a good cause. In 2019, Carrefour pledged to phase out single-use plastics by 2025, a policy that mirrors regulations introduced in Bahrain, recently. Following the pledge, Carrefour launched reusable bags for fruits and vegetables when shopping in stores and banned manufacturing, importing and circulating of single-use plastic bags which are less than 35 microns in thickness, in-line with the order issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Bahrain.

Most recently, Carrefour successfully phased out single-use plastic cutlery in five countries including Georgia, Kenya, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, and Uzbekistan in 2022, and plans to increase that number to 10 countries by the end of the year.

“Sustainability has been deeply ingrained in our company’s vision for decades. Our past achievements stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment to driving positive impact and change. As we move forward, and by setting high standards for our operations, forging meaningful partnerships, and engaging with our communities, we are confident that we can continue striving for even greater milestones and creating a more sustainable and responsible business for the benefit of our planet and future generations,” commented Ghassan Jaroudi, Head of Commercial & Operations of Carrefour Bahrain at Majid Al Futtaim Retail.

Carrefour stores across the Kingdom of Bahrain are committed to making a meaningful difference for surrounding communities with regards to reducing plastic pollution. On International Plastic Bag Free Day, select stores in Bahrain will be hosting purpose-led activities, to encourage its customers to live more sustainably, including Buy-One-Get-One Free throughout the month of July and giving away a total of 1000 free reusable bags to customers at Carrefour Bahrain Mall and City Centre Bahrain. Looking back at past milestones, Carrefour will continue setting high standards for a sustainable, responsible and self-sufficient business across its expanding footprint in the region.
