Prof. Rami Yagan, Oncology and Breast Surgery Consultant and Professor in the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), confirmed that the last decades have witnessed clear developments in the field of early detection and surgical and drug treatment of breast cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in women.
Prof. Yagan pointed out that there are cases of a rare congenital condition in which a person is born with additional breast tissue in a location other than the usual location in the chest, while there also may be additional breast tissue in the armpit area, chest wall and even the abdomen.
In a lecture organised by the CMMS and accredited by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA), Prof. Yagan discussed how to diagnose and treat breast cancer that appears in additional mammary tissues. He explained the pathological aspects related to breast cancer and detailed the characterisation of these mammary tissues.
“In most cases, the problem is related to the aesthetic aspects of the body, and cosmetic removal of these additional tissues is performed for this purpose. In very rare cases, breast cancer may appear in these additional tissues, making treatment more challenging in determining the most appropriate surgical treatment and supportive treatments for surgical treatment,” he stated.
Prof. Yagan developed a clinical classification for these cases so that they can be easily described by researchers and facilitate the exchange and comparison of information related to their treatment. The discussion also addressed the best ways to spread awareness about these cases to achieve higher recovery rates.
